An experience in Labanotation as a cognitive aid in dance education János FÜGEDI In his former presentation at the 1999 ICKL conference, with the title "The Effect of Cognitive Factors to Human Movement" Fugedi pointed out that the cognitive psychological theories regard verbalization an important role at the beginning of learning movement tasks. Dance notation from cognitive point of view can also be taken as a mean of verbalization, or as Rudolf Laban stated it can even go beyond the limits of verbalization. Dance notation at the same time is a movement imagination tool as well because it is expedient to evoke the image of movement in the reader. The positive effect of movement imagination during movement acquisition was also emphasized by the introduced cognitive psychological theories. Now Fugedi leads an experiment to investigate the validity of the this hypothesis in the field of Labanotation. The experiment is based on two groups reconstructing dance from notation and as imitative learning. The results of reconstructions are compared and evaluated whether a change of paradigm in dance education - a change from imitative learning to interpretive learning - can be supported with experimental results. |
