Labanotation Shorthand as an Aid in Tap Dance Class Billie MAHONEY Proposal for sharing innovations in using a shorthand version of Labanotation as a tool in clarifying rhythms and movement in tap dance for adult beginners. Often students of tap dance do not realize the subtleties in rhythms in doing a shuffle step: 8 & 1, 2 & 3, vs. 1 & 2 & 3 & 4; or a flap (brush step) LNs verbal breakdown of the division of counts also gives a clear definition along with the music notation: 1 &, 1y&u, 1 a da; or showing divisions on the vertical staff often gets the message home where physical and aural demonstrations can be to no avail. For years, I have used arrows on action strokes in the support and leg gesture staff to clarify differences. Once it is realized: You are doing this . This is what I want , the proper results are achieved. |
