LabanLab: Web-based Tutorials for Labanotation Sheila MARION, Rachel BOGGIA We are in the process of creating web-based tutorials for learning the basics of Labanotation. The focus is on experiential learning and application to reading dance scores, through the use of computer technology. Each section will contain a movement exploration of the physical concepts behind the symbols, guided readings, and dance excerpts from various styles and cultures. The web pages will incorporate music, video and animation in addition to text and notation symbols, and will have web links for broader context as well as referrals to notation centers, certified teachers and textbooks for further study. The project draws on teaching methods developed at The Ohio State University. It will be freely accessible to anyone who hears about dance notation and wishes to learn more. We expect to complete tutorials on the five core basics supports and travelling, rhythms, arm and leg gestures, elevation, and turning by this coming spring. Each core concept is approached through seven different experiences: 1) movement exploration, media: motif, text, and music with voice-over; 2) guided reading, media: notation, text and video or animation; 3) reading dances, examples of short dances from a variety of cultures, media: notation, music, video; 4) peripheral material, explanation of extra things encountered in a score like black pins, etc., media: help balloons; 5) dictation, for fundamentals of theory and application, media: video or animation, text, notation; 6) theory basics, media: text, notation, pin board for posting questions and responses, links and referrals; 7) creative, including additional improvisation or choreographic suggestions such as variations on a theme, manipulation of given material, add-on phrases using the notated phrases, etc., media: text, notation, audio, motif. |
