Location

The Beijing Normal University is situated near the center of the city on the 3rd Ring Road.
(The 1st Ring Road is around The Forbidden City, the actual center of Beijing).


Registration Fee
We are trying to hold the registration fee to US $ 80 / 64 euros. There may be a small charge of about US $ 12 / 10 euros for the five days, for transportation by bus between the University and the Hotels.To attend the conference and receive the Technical papers before the conference, you must be a current ICKL member.
2004 Membership fee: US $ 35 or 28 euros.

Friendship Hotel (4 star. Like a Holiday Inn)
Standard Room with two beds, bathroom and breakfast.
Single : 620 yuan ($75.00 / 60 euros) *
For 2 people : 310 yuan ($37.50 / 30 euros each) *

Jingmen Hotel (2 1/2 star hotel)
Standard room with two beds, bathroom and breakfast.
Single: 262 yuan ($32.00 / 25 euros) *
For 2 people: 131 yuan ($16.00 / 12.50 each) *

Jingmen Hotel (2 star hotel)
Standard room with 2 beds, bathroom and breakfast.
Single: 200 yuan ($25.00 / 20 euros) *
For 2 people: 100 yuan ($12.50 / 10 euros each) *
(Rooms are smaller and breakfasts simpler for the lower stars)

ICKL’s On-site Conference Co-ordinator says the 2 1/2 star is much better than the 2 star.

Meals
Lunch and dinner at the University would come to about $12.00 together. *
There are also many restaurants nearby, off campus.

Visa
People travelling to China will require a VISA. Foreign visitors can obtain a visa from Chinese embassies and consulates. Please check locally for further details of your nearest Chinese embassy. Please ensure that you have at least six months left on your passport before you travel. Check your local requirements for obtaining a visa and write us in good time should you require a letter of invitation.

General Information

Arrival at Beijing Airport

Currency Exchange Booths
Open during the day, but if arriving very early in the morning or late at night it might be wise to get some Chinese currency before traveling.

Taxis to the Hotel
There is an official taxi stand with security guards. Do NOT accept offers from taxi drivers who are not at that stand.

Cost of Taxi
Lollie suggests it will be about the equivalent of $10 to the hotel.

Communicating with Taxi Driver
Lollie will send a map with the names and addresses of each hotel in Chinese and English, which we will e-mail to those attending the conference. Thus you can show the driver your destination.

Temperatures
These are 30-32C, 86-90F. If air conditioned building temperatures are similar to those in Hong Kong, which are very cold, you will need warm sweaters/jackets.

Equipment for the Conference
Video format: PAL
Computers: PC: Windows XP. Mac: OS 9 and 10.

Credit Cards
China accepts MasterCard,Visa, American Express, JCB, and Diners Club.
Holders of these cards can withdraw cash at the Bank of China or use the cards for payment in stores, restaurants and hotels designated by the Bank of China.

Travelers Checks
The Bank of China can cash traveler’s checks sold by international commercial banks and traveler’s check companies in Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, and Switzerland.
The Bank of China serves as agent for traveler’s checks of the American Express Check Co., First National City Bank, Sumitomo Bank, Swiss Bank Corp., and Thomas Cook Traveler’s Check Co.

Settling of Accounts with foreign currency is forbidden in China. The Bank of China will convert certain currencies into RMB (yuan). These currencies are US dollar; Euro; British pound; Australian , Canadian, Hong Kong and Singapore dollars; Danish, Norwegian and Swedish krona; Malaysian ringgit; Macao pataca.
Remaining cash can be converted back to foreign cash upon presentation of a foreign currency conversion receipt

Drinking Water
Please note that only a few luxury hotels have drinkable tap water. Check with your hotel. Boiled water is available in guest rooms and bottled mineral water is available everywhere.

Telephone cards are available in various denominations for national and international calls.

Electricity in China is 220 volts. Bathrooms in luxury hotels have 120 volt sockets.
