SESSIONS Non-Technical Presentations, Panels & Workshops Labanotation Education in Taiwan / Abstract Ra-Yuan Tseng Labanotation has been introduced to Taiwan for many years. As many dance educators in Taiwan have recognized its importance, Labanotation has become one of the subjects in the curriculum design in many dance departments during the 1990s. However, during these years, there are many different school systems in Taiwan, each system makes up the curriculum according to its needs and goals. In fact, there are many dance departments that have changed Labanotation from a requirement course to an elective course. This shift seems to suggest that Labanotation is no longer considered as an important component in the field of dance as it had been in the 1990s. The purpose of this paper is to point out some curriculum structural problems that exist in the teaching of Labanotation in Taiwan, such as the credit hours for each semester, the numbers of students and the year of offering such class. The author will address these structural problems by looking at the curriculum design of the Labanotation and raise the attention of the dance educators who are involved in the process of curriculum design. Ra-Yuan Tseng begun her professional dance training when she attended National Taiwan Academy of Arts in 1980. She received her B.F.A. in dance from Chinese Culture University in 1987. In 1992, she received her M.A. from Ohio State University where she acquired her Labanotation training. Now she is an Associate Professor at Tainan Womans College of Arts and Technology where she teaches Elementary Labanotation, Dance Composition and Introduction to Dance. |
