Salome - a written choreography

Salome - a Glisten for 14 dancers was performed in Tanzquartier Wien, Museumsquartier in November 2004.
I would like to introduce and present this dance piece which was developed from scores written for the choreography.
The scores carry the basic ideas for the dance, its movements, its composition, constellations and relationships between the dancers.
The score serves as a tool and instrument
- to prepare the choreography for the rehearsals
- to design ideas for the dance
- to develop models of moving for the dancers.
Mainly the score is designed in and out of Labanotation though it does not consist of only structured notated material.
It is important to say that this procedure has its rationale in the fact that dancers here do not read notation. In the process of rehearsing a piece it would be impossible to introduce this kind of working process. It would be necessary that somebody reads and translates the notation for the dancers, which would end in the interpretation being conventional and imitative, not inventive.
I am specifically interested in creating choreographies which do not give real movements to the dancers in order to imitate the shapes, forms and rhythmical patterns.
My intention is to invent frameworks and ideas which carry the dance and its potential; to form a choreographic text for the dancers whereby they find their individual ways of moving and their physical energy.
This form of improvisation means individual experimental work, but it is not self reflective. It does not only refer to the dancer´s person, his or her body and experiences, but it has a constructive input, an imaginative world to refer to.
The background of the piece Salome - a Glisten illustrates the variety of the history of Salome through the centuries within a contemporary framework.
Over the layers of the old Salomes is danced a new one - a contemporary one. Her attributes are of a contradictory variety but what she always did was dancing and she is a figure of moving over the borders of the actual conventions and therefore creating an alternative visionary world of being.
Another implication of Salome is that of projection between the genders, Salome mirrors herself in men and vice versa.
To express these visions I chose a relatively large number of dancers - nine male dancers and five female dancers.
The historical fact that the figure Salome appears in all the centuries but always with differerent characteristics I transformed choreographically by using the repetition and variation as a medium to carry these ideas into space.



Rose Breuss - Born in Vorarlberg, Austria. Studied at University for Music in Vienna, Theaterschool Amsterdam, Temple University Philadelphia, Labanotation in Guildford. Teaches at IDA - Institute for Dance Arts at Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität Linz and Universität Salzburg. Choreographer in collaboration with different dance companies and houses in Austria: Ballett of Wiener Oper, x.IDA, Tanztheater Wien and Tanzquartier Wien. Collaborations with composers and orchestras as Klangforum Wien, Konzerthaus Wien. Participation at festivals: Wiener Festwochen, szene salzburg, Feldkircher Tanzherbst, Hörgänge, Regensburger Tanztage...
