SESSIONS Movement Training and Performance Enhancement Utilizing Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals by Bala Sarasvati, USA Workshop Contemporary trends in dance performance requires dance artists and educators to prepare dancers for a wide range of movement styles and choreographic forms without sacrificing the importance of a solid foundation in technique. The necessity to diminish common movement issues and optimize overall performance skills and qualities is concurrent in today's dance training as dance companies perform an increased range of movement styles, and performances become more physically and aesthetically demanding. Labans analysis of the body in motion and interpretation of movement dynamics promote technical and artistic clarity and refinement to support a wide range of repertory demands. The application of Bartenieffs fundamental movement principles to dance training facilitates learning regarding the anatomical function, and how to improve movement efficiency, reduce muscular overuse and physical stress, and better facilitate the mover's spatial-dynamic relationship. This dance technique-based workshop will provide guided movement experiences that incorporate LMA/BF theories, assisting dancers/teachers/reconstructors to develop their own strategies to resolve undesirable movement issues, hone technical skills, refine style and expand movement expressivity. We will explore concepts, methodology and movement sequences and apply to technique and performance training. Dynamic alignment, effort phrasing, inner shaping, off vertical transitions and momentum will be addressed. Bala Sarasvati, CMA, MA and MFA, has specialized in the application of LMA/BF to dance training and performance for the past twenty years. She has presented dance training and performance workshops throughout the US, and in Taiwan, Republic of China and Rio Janeiro Brazil. She is Head of the Department of Dance at the University of Georgia and Artistic Director of CORE Concert Dance Company. |
