Laban Movement Analysis applied to Dramatic Movement
by Jorge Gayon,
Mexico/France, assisted by Greta Maes, Belgium/France

Paper and workshop

This lecture ensues the topic of our last presentation and scores-workshop at ICKL 1997, in Hong Kong. Taking note of comments and observations made on the corporal-mime-scores and on their interpretation, we have since focused our study and practical exploration on Laban’s effort-training and analysis. Its application to Decroux’s movement-material represents a considerable evolution in our approach. Today, we would like to share with you this experience and talk about our vision of dramatic movement.

Definition of dramatic movement
Either written or executed, our dramatic movement has its own characteristics. We will clarify the focal points to observe when notating or analysing its material, revealing its specific nature.

Workshop: as counterpart to the lecture; the nature of dramatic movement in practice, with corporal mime examples, illustrating Laban’s effort-training and including reading and execution of scores, with and without effort-notation
