SESSIONS Relationship between Movement and Personality by Dianne Dulicai, USA Paper This presentation is a highlight from the joint research project by Dr. Marion North and Dr. Dianne Dulicai, updating the original doctoral dissertation of Dr. North some 30 years ago that examined the relationship between movement and personality. Dr. Dulicai, the junior author, and presenter lends her 25 years of academic, clinical and research experience applying the Laban method of analysis through her research and that of her students. These two colleagues are preparing this material for a book. Twenty years ago Dr. North published the definitive book explaining the Laban system of movement analysis and demonstrating the correlation to personality through a collection of movement portraits of children. By updating the movement assessment, offering psychological profiles and presenting highlights of personal interviews, the authors demonstrate the validity of the original assessments made when the subjects were less than two years old. For the limited time of this presentation, the authors have selected one movement profile demonstrating the preferred movement characteristics during early childhood, the present movement characteristics and the correlations between those predictions and psychological testing and personal interview. Psychological factors discussed are: - Internal External Focus - Global Behavior - Emotional Intelligence - General Responsiveness - Psychological Needs Dr. Dulicai will provide samples of the notation used in the project as well as highlights of the psychological testing used. If video is available a short excerpt from the original study will be presented. Dianne Dulicai (Ph.D., ADTR) founded the dance/movement therapy section of the Creative Arts Department at Hahnemann Medical School and College where she remains senior consultant to the program and replicated the program at the Laban Centre, Goldsmiths'College. She served as President of the American Dance Therapy Association and chair of the National Alliance of Pupil Services Organizations. She continues her research and consulting in dance/movement therapy both in the US as well as programs in Europe and South America. |
