SESSIONS Notation on film, notation for film by Janos Fugedi, Hungary Paper Labanotation has been introduced as a tool for the Hungarian folk dance research about 50 years ago. During the recent years the teacher training followed the example: the new methodology books for traditional dance education also use Labanotation to illustrate the movement text of methods. These books were completed with films to help students with style. As notation illustrates the steps of methods in the books, a similar need emerged to help understanding movement on film. The presentation will show examples how this need is solved and how Labanotation on film can serve a double goal: helping understanding the thesis of teaching methods while also that of notation in movement. During the first experiments with shooting and editing methodology video material, another possible use of notation was realized. Notation became vital for building the scenes, and was integrated into the scenario. The presentation will introduce the steps how a dance teaching methodology film is created, showing excerpts from productions. Janos Fugedi (Ph.D.) is an ethnochoreologist and dance notator at the Institute for Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His main research area is notation theory, movement and dance analysis, notation education and computer application in the field of dance notation. His notation activity focuses on the ethnic dances of Central Europe, especially on the authentic Hungarian folk dances. Fugedi is also a professor of Labanotation at the Hungarian Dance Academy. He is a fellow member of ICKL since 1989, had a position in the Reseach Panel of ICKL between 1991-2001, and chaired the RP at the 1997 conference of ICKL in Hong Kong. He is now a member of the ICKL Board of Trustees. |
