HUBERMAN MUÑIZ, Miriam -
Mexico
Choreology is a useful observation and analytical tool in the choreographic process. The
author has turned informal conversations with choreographers into a formal procedure
called choreological counseling for choreographers, or “asesorías coreográficas”, for
short.
Instead of writing dance criticism, the author realized that what she was doing was
analyzing a choreography in choreological terms. Because she considered this to be an
unfair advantage over the choreographer, she decided to find a way of sharing the
choreological information with the choreographers before opening night.
This presentation traces how the author developed the idea of choreological counseling
and gives examples of how she worked with different dance companies (Theatre
Encorps, Antares, Barro Rojo, Irma Meza Danza Contemporánea).
The author has found that choreology offers reliable elements to identify in a speedy
and accurate manner a choreography’s structural or interpretative problems and to
provide not one unique solution, but a wide range of possibilities from which the
choreographer can choose from. Choreological counseling is about sharing useful
movement analysis information which the choreographer can inspect, experiment with,
discard or use, according to his/her creative intention and artistic style.
Miriam Huberman combines choreology, injury prevention, dance history and dance education in most of her work. BA in History (UNAM, 1986). MA in Dance Studies (Laban Centre for Movement and Dance, 1991). Miriam helped design the dance curricula for the BAs in Dance at the CENART and at the University of Sonora. Currently, Miriam is involved in the creation of Tampico’s first contemporary dance company, teaching injury prevention and choreology. Both her theses (The Dance of Death as a Reflection of Medieval Culture and Society and Rudolf Laban and the Concept of Choreosophy) are in the process of being published.
