SESSIONS
Paper
SAINT-SMITH, Shelly -
UK
This paper considers the responsibility of the dance director in documenting his/her
understanding, interpretation and treatment of a choreographic work as part of the
process of reconstructing, reviving, restaging or directing a work from score. This is
achieved through a close examination of the newly revised and updated Labanotation
score of Hanya Holm’s Jocose (1981-84) and the process of creating the score’s
addendum.
This project began in 2001 after directing Jocose from the original score. It
can be argued that the revised and updated score and score addendum effectively
document the experiences of two directors, enabling the notation score (and therefore the
choreographic work) to evolve without replacing the form in which it was originally
preserved. For future dance directors and audiences of Jocose, authenticity is achieved
from the basis of a myriad of notation-based perspectives rather than that of the sole
notator. This paper argues that in documenting his/her experience of the directing
process, the dance director contributes to the evolution of both the notation score and the
choreographic work as living, present and relevant entities ichoreographer.
Shelly Saint-Smith, MFA, BA (Hons), is a Fellow of ICKL and a member of the ICKL Research Panel. As Lecturer in Dance and Notation at the Royal Academy of Dance in London she teaches notation, dance analysis, modern technique and repertory for performance. Her current research interests combine performance, notation and use of technology in dance education. Shelly is a 2007/08 recipient of the Lisa Ullmann Travelling Scholarship Fund and her ICKL presentation was especially selected for sponsorship by the Laban Guild.
