SESSIONS - PAPER

Capturing intention?
Documenting the EG | PC’s workshop Double Skin / Double Mind.

Marion Bastien, FRANCE

Dance company EG | PC is based in Amsterdam, where the partnership between Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten began in 1995. In 2005, EG | PC initiated the interdisciplinary research project:   Dance and Media; new ways of notating, documenting and recreating dance.

In 2006, a symposium around Dance and Media gathered people from different disciplines (gesture analysis, cognition research, cultural studies/ philosophy, cinematography/ documentary, interactive media design, dance notation – Benesh and Laban), forming an interdisciplinary team.

Based in the thematics of notation, documentation and recreation of dance this research project aimed to create a dynamic source of information. By the end of 2007, the research results were presented under different formats; DVD-ROM, a film documentary a publication and an interactive installation, all documenting the workshop Double Skin / Double Mind.

The workshop Double Skin / Double Mind represents the basis of  EG | PC creative work and has developed through the years a very clear meta-structure of core movements.

The paper will present the global project, and more specifically the notation issues: the challenge of notating a very specific technical style, in which inner intent is said to be crucial; the questions arising when documenting open structures (the warm up being taught mostly with prescriptive indications); the collaboration with other team members' disciplines.
