Six considerations regarding Labanotation:
Reflections on diverse experiences and lessons learned
Judy Van Zile, USA
As a long-time practitioner and teacher of Labanotation, the author identifies six key considerations regarding Labanotation: the tool, the translation, the translator, limitations, understanding, and applications. Drawing on personal experiences presented in an anecdotal fashion, she explains these points by recounting her changing attitudes toward dance notation and its powerful and diverse values. She concludes by articulating implications of these considerations for the teaching of Labanotation. Throughout, examples are based largely on her involvements with Korean dance.
