EXPLORING DIMENSIONS:
THE PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL APPLICATIONS OF
KINETOGRAPHY LABAN / LABANOTATION, MOTIF AND
LABAN-BASED STUDIES AND RESEARCH
CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS: PAPERS, WORKSHOPS & PANELS

The organizers of the 2011 International Council of Kinetography Laban/Labanotation invite members and
interested individuals to submit proposals for papers, workshops and panels on research and applications of
Laban-based systems including, but not limited to, Kinetography Laban/Labanotation, Laban Movement
Analysis, and Motif Notation, in areas such as movement research (comparative analysis, stylistic analysis),
dance documentation, directing from score, education / pedagogy (in both dance and interdisciplinary
studies), technology, dance practices (technique, compositional process, performance, etc.), dance studies
(history, theory, cultural studies, etc.).
The Board of Trustees and on-site organizer, acting as the selection committee, will give priority to
original/unpublished research. The selection committee will also give particular attention to presentations
with topics related to Middle Europe.
The papers or abstracts will be published in the ICKL Proceedings after the event.
The time available for presentations is 30 minutes, inclusive of question and discussion period (generally 10
minutes are suggested for questions and discussion). More time may be available for workshops and panels.
1. Please submit an abstract of your paper, a description of the workshop or a description of the panel
including prospective panelists, to the Secretary. Proposals should be postmarked no later than
December 15, 2010. Decisions regarding the presentations will be released in late January 2011.
2. Proposals should be of no more than 1 page in length, and should include the name,
address, phone number, fax number and e-mail (if available) of the author, as well as space
and equipment needs.
3. If using notation to illustrate your presentation, examples on an accompanying page should be
included with your submission.

CALL FOR TECHNICAL PAPERS
DEADLINE – FEBRUARY 16, 2011
1. Researchers should send by e-mail (preferred) or postal mail a brief statement of intent, describing the topic(s) they plan to present to the Secretary of ICKL, postmarked no later than February 16, 2011. It will then be sent to the Chair of the Research Panel who will notify researchers of any duplication of topics.
2. Authors are requested to send a copy of their completed paper(s) to each member of the Research Panel postmarked no later than March 11, 2011.
3. Papers should include the name, address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail of the author. Authors should number each paragraph and example to facilitate reference. Please refer to 2001 ICKL papers for samples of numbering system.
4. The Research Panel will review all papers and evaluate them on the basis of the logic of theoretical development, thoroughness of research, completeness of ideas, and clarity of presentation. Authors must provide citations for all sources for facts, quotes, and examples.
5. The author or Research Panel may solicit comments from other individuals known to be interested in a particular topic.
6. Each Panel member will return comments with appropriate recommendations for revision to authors by April 18, 2011.
7. Authors are requested to send a copy of their revised paper(s) to each member of the Research Panel postmarked no later than May 16, 2011. The Research Panel will evaluate revised papers based on the criteria listed at 4 above, and make final selections for conference presentation. While it is not necessary that they revise their ideas based on Research Panel comments, it is required that authors:
A.
provide thorough citations for all sources, including those from standard texts, (include footnotes and bibliography);
B. number each paragraph and example;
C. correct factual errors; and,
D. issues raised by Research Panel members should be addressed and/or answered in the revised paper. Conference time will be used for other issues that arise from discussion.
